말로만 백날 방송이나 강의로 떠들어데는 논객이나 그저그런 책벌레가 아니라 소크라테스처럼 내면의 진실된 마음을 가꾸고 실천적 삶을 살자는 것이다. 그는 예수나 붓다처럼 포교활동은 전혀하지 않았다. 오로지 부를 철저히 멀리하고 자신의 내면을 성찰하는데만 일생을 바쳤다. 심지어 자신의 얘기를 듣는 이에게는 돈까지 주겠다고 하였다. 부를 멀리하고 가난에 찌든 소크라테스는 악처 크산티페에게 오강물을 뒤집어 쓰긴했지만 제자 플라톤과 크세노폰이 스승이 왜 부당하게 죽었고 그의 업적을 기리는데수많은 저서와 평생을 바쳤고 이후 플라톤의 사상이 헬레니즘의 배경이 되었다. 소크라테스가 부당하게 죽은 날에는 아리스토텔레스가 "아테네가 철학에게 첫 번째로 범죄를 저질렀던 날"이라고 맹비난하고 아테네를 떠나 마케도니아로 가버렸다. 중요한 것은 크세노폰은 플라톤을 반박하기 위해서 향연,국가, 소크라테스의 변론이란 똑같은 책을 썼다는 것이고 소크라테스의 스승이 아스파시아란 매춘부를 경영하는 여자란 사실이다. 플라톤은 사상가였고, 크세노폰은 아테네 철학자였지만 세계를 제패한 폐르시아 전쟁에 용병으로 직접 참가하고 전쟁을 치르면서 키루스 대왕의 일대기를 책으로 남기고 몸으로 실천하고 보여준 활동가란 사실이다.
과거의 한계를 발견하고 미래를 탁월하게 개척하는 사람들, 조건 없는 후원으로 거리의 가난한 예술가들을 위대한 천재로 만든 사람들, 개인의 이득과 세속적인 욕심으로 부를 축적하는 것이 아니라 공동체를 위해서 모든 것을 헌신하고 아낌없이 떠난 사람들, 이것이 바로 사사로운 개인의 탐욕과 뇌물로 얼룩진 대한민국과 메디치 가문의 차원이 다른 공동체적 사고의 차이점이다. 그래서 우리는 타인을 배려하고 자신을 낮추는 공동체적인 삶을 지향해야 의미 있는 것에 그나마 조금은 다가갈 수가 있는 것이다.
